Enter the Before I [fill in the blank] Challenge

Posted by inkpop on February 23, 2010

What will you do before you graduate?
Before you fall in love?
Before you travel to an unknown place?
Have you ever stopped to think about the here-and-now and what it means before you do whatever is that you’ll do next?

This is the writing prompt for the seventh writing Challenge, which is inspired by Lauren Oliver’s Before I Fall.

Like other inkpop Challenges, the “Before I [fill in the blank]” topic is merely a topic to get writers’ creative wheels turning. Authors can select any goal, dream, or next accomplishment to fill in the blank. What does your dream looks like, and how you plan to attain it? In other words, dream big.

Two random “Before I [fill in the blank]” inkpop Challenge writers and two Challenge commenters will be randomly selected to win Before I Fall, in addition to three HarperTeen books of their choosing. Winners will be announced here on the inkpop blog and on inkpop Forums.

ABOUT INKPOP CHALLENGES—the online community that connects rising stars in teen lit with talent-spotting readers and publishing pros—invites writers and teen-lit fans to enter inkpop Challenges, writing contests that develop fresh ideas, writing ability, and positive feedback.

One of HarperTeen’s youngest authors, Lauren Oliver was previously an editorial assistant at a publishing company in New York. A graduate of the University of Chicago and the MFA program at New York University, she is now a full-time writer and lives in Brooklyn, New York. This is her first novel.

What if you had only one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life?

Samantha Kingston has it all: the world’s most crush-worthy boyfriend, three amazing best friends, and first pick of everything at Thomas Jefferson High—from the best table in the cafeteria to the choicest parking spot. Friday, February 12, should be just another day in her charmed life.
